Salt and Light

Matthew 5:13 (NAB): "You are the salt of the earth. But if salt loses its taste, with what can it be seasoned? It is no longer good for anything but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot.

Meditating on this passage reveals to me these things:
1) We add flavor to this otherwise very wicked world. God may see wickedness as that without the taste of God's goodness (notice the similarity with “O taste and see the goodness of the Lord” in Ps 34:8).
2) We may lose our taste. We may be too immersed in the affairs of the world without letting our spiritual life be refreshed by God's word and the Sacraments.
3) If we become tasteless, we are thrown away.

How will I become tasteless? Am I? How will I further add God's goodness to the world so that at the final day, God will see how good His people are?

Matthew 5:14-16 (NAB): "You are the light of the world. A city set on a mountain cannot be hidden.
Nor do they light a lamp and then put it under a bushel basket; it is set on a lampstand, where it gives light to all in the house.
Just so, your light must shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your heavenly Father."

God has made us beacons of His light, through our Baptism and acceptance of Him as Lord and Savior through our Faith and works. But do we share our faith with others? It may seem a while before they may see God in the things we do, but in the end, this is the GOAL: to let them glorify the heavenly Father.

Today's first day of class. Lord, let my light shine.
